GHGH Youth leaders speak about Social & Emotional health, community change and personal transformation @Radio Bilingue
This past Monday afternoon, Alza tu Voz, Radio Bilingue’s Youth Focused radio talk show invited members of the GHGH Girls’ Leadership Network (GLN) to be interviewed about their experience in advocating with the Board of Supervisors for Social & Emotional health services and resources for youth throughout Monterey County. GLN members also spoke about access to social and emotional health services in their schools and communities and about how their participation in GHGH programs have had an impact on their lives and social and emotional health.
The interview highlighted the Board of Supervisors’ adoption of the GHGH Resolution on March 17th. The Resolution supports the prioritization of social and emotional health for youth in the county and asks that the Board recognize the importance of this topic and the work of GHGH in addressing this health issue. GLN members spoke about the process of drafting the Resolution, the research involved, the timeline and what it was like to speak to Board of Supervisors. The GLN highlighted the need to go to people in power to ask for what we need and recognized that the adoption of this Resolution is just a first step.
GLN leaders eloquently spoke about their experiences in accessing social and emotional health support at their schools with counselors and teachers. They noted varied experiences, some positive and some negative, and recommended further training for teachers and counselors on how to support youth struggling with important topics like bullying, self-esteem and depression. In addition, they noted how programs and support provided by GHGH agency programs have proven to positively impact the social and emotional health of participants and how the model of peer education of these programs creates a culture of trust and respect between youth and adults.
There were some nerves (and nervous giggling off the air)! But we know that when #youthspeak, it is powerful. We talked about a few solutions including; researching each school’s health services to address barriers at the individual school level and providing training across the county to counselors, staff and teachers and parents.
We are looking forward to continuing the conversation and thank Radio Bilingue for helping us the word out!
Have something to say? Know a solution that could work at your school? Be part of the conversation and hashtag #GHGHMyHealthMatters to tell us what you think!
